Joe Biden, self-styling as a seasoned foreign policy hand, steps in it and then wallows in it with comments and 'clarifications' on Putin and the Ukraine. The Times is clearly making a heroic effort to avoid panic:
Biden Predicts Putin Will Order Ukraine Invasion, but ‘Will Regret Having Done It’
President Biden’s comments went well beyond the formal intelligence assessments described by White House officials, which conclude that Russia’s president has not yet decided whether to invade.
WASHINGTON — President Biden said on Wednesday that he now expected President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia would order an invasion of Ukraine, delivering a grim assessment that the diplomacy and threat of sanctions issued by the United States and its European allies were unlikely to stop the Russian leader from sending troops across the border.
“Do I think he’ll test the West, test the United States and NATO, as significantly as he can? Yes, I think he will,” Mr. Biden told reporters during a nearly two-hour news conference in the East Room of the White House. He added, almost with an air of fatalism: “But I think he will pay a serious and dear price for it that he doesn’t think now will cost him what it’s going to cost him. And I think he will regret having done it.”
Asked to clarify whether he was accepting that an invasion was coming, Mr. Biden said: “My guess is he will move in. He has to do something.”
The president later acknowledged that Mr. Putin’s move might not amount to a full-scale invasion of the country.
Yeah, that clarification went well. So well the Times chose to bury the specific quote, although they present criticisms of it. This is CNN:
"It's one thing if it's a minor incursion and we end up having to fight about what to do and not do..."
AHHH! State Dept. and White House telephone lines have been burning up since then:
Biden Strengthens His Words on Ukraine After Flustering European Partners
After the president laid bare divisions over Russian meddling in Ukraine, his administration scrambled to get on the same page with European allies.

Hitler's British death island: Astonishing story of how the Nazis murdered 40,000 people in Channel Island [Alderney]concentration camps - and planned to blitz the South Coast with chemical weapons
- Top-secret launcher site for V1 missiles was being constructed on the tiny island
- Shockingly, they were to be armed not with conventional explosives, but deadly nerve gas Sarin
-Targets ranged from Weymouth to Plymouth, where in 1943-44, hundreds of thousands of British and U.S. troops prepared for D-Day invasion

I was watching a movie today and suddenly remembered that for years we had a real human skeleton in our basement rec room. I called my sister to see if that was correct or one of my weird brain lapses.
Indeed, we did. My dad brought it home when he found it in an old school his construction company was tearing down in southern Indiana. We named it Wilbur and used to dress him up for holidays. My mom finally made him get rid of it when her mother happened upon it. I think they gave it to the high school biology department .
I had a very interesting childhood. 😄

It's winter. generally speaking a bad time to launch an offensive. Even the Tollybons know this. If Belarus joins in then that is going to set off alarms on the other side. Russia is moving 5 landing ships towards Crimea. Encirclement.
I don't think the Poles will stand still and they are very good at killing Russians. The Baltic states are already sending weapons to Ukraine as are the Brits.
Sweden and Finland are in the game as well. Dominos and all that.
Joe Biden could very easily be drawn into this war and instead of projecting strength has projected compete worthlessness, as have the f'ing Germans.
The new Chancellor is the worthless SDP mayor from Hamburg who just caved to Putin. As my friends over there tell me the German electorate have degenerated into idiots. Sound familiar?
Putin is to an extent a hollow tiger. His military is lacking and the idiots in our intelligentsia are terrified of his news releases. Hypersonic missiles, an inventory of maybe 100 Armata tanks, etc don't make a major fighting force and Russia's military record isn't the best. Do they have leadership? Logistics? Freedom of maneuver?
And in the meantime China has dialed back their incursions into Taiwanese airspace. We have one battle group in the South China Sea and another not far off.
I am sure they are talking back & forth.

Since a couple of days ago Twitter has modified its system. I click on a Twitter link that somebody has posted. As usual, not being a subscriber, I can still read the link and the subsequent replies until I get to the "more tweets" section that follows many tweet threads.
As soon as "more tweets" appears a "log-in" dialog screen pops up obscuring the content.
Sorry, no, I'm not going to log in to see the algorithmically-driven content that they think I might want to see.
Are their new subscriber numbers lacking?
I'm going to delete the Twitter cookie and see if that works to clear the problem. Has anyone else noticed this?

Why were they able to roll out 5G in Europe and Asia so easily?
The US 5G spectrum is different than ROW. All of this hullabaloo is over “channel C” which is just under 4 Ghz. Radio altimeters use spectrum just above 4 Ghz. There is concern over interference, not that the FAA has gotten off its ass and done any consequential testing.

Look at winter warfare and it's no fun at all. Much higher hurdles for success.
It seems that many of the Europeans are waking up to the threat.
Putin will try to intimidate as much as he can before sending troops in. Russia's economy is buoyed by oil prices at the moment but it is still unstable.
Wars chew up huge amounts of resources to the point where Russia's economy, especially with sanctions, could get crushed.

It doesn't pay to place your supermarket order online late and when you are hungry.
My order included cinnamon buns. There four in great big buns all covered in something. Very tasty, but filling and bad for me.

yes the Russian/ and ethnic Ukrainians is the worse kind of hatfield/mccoy scrum, they had more success in the Russian enclaves in the Donbass, but they didn't advance much, in the preceding 7 years,

I avoid the bakery department when filling my Kroger order. Their cinnamon rolls are like you desvribed and I can eat a lot of them very quickly!

A federal district court in Texas has blocked the last Biden vaccine mandate, on federal employees
Sadly, not true--Sec of HHS mandates experimental mRNA injections for all employees of any facility servicing Medicare or Medicaid employees.
You know, the people who put their lives on the line the past two years, caring for those patients.
THAT one needs to go down too.
