Joe Biden goes global with his gaffe-o-matic act.
How Biden sparked a global uproar with nine ad-libbed words about Putin
By declaring that the Russian leader ‘cannot remain in power,’ the U.S. president seemed to suggest a drastic change in U.S. policy — prompting a scramble by White House officials
With nine ad-libbed words at the end of a 27-minute speech, Biden created an unwanted distraction to his otherwise forceful remarks by calling for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be pushed out of office.
“For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power,” Biden said.
It was a remarkable statement that would reverse stated U.S. policy, directly countering claims from senior administration officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who have insisted regime change is not on the table. It went further than even U.S. presidents during the Cold War, and immediately reverberated around the world as world leaders, diplomats, and foreign policy experts sought to determine what Biden said, what it meant — and, if he didn’t mean it, why he said it.
Well. Biden said it because he meant it. Also, because he's an old guy who's lost whatever weak filter he once had (his gaffe-o-matic act has played for years.)
So now diplomats get to earn their paychecks explaining that Biden didn't mean what he obviously meant. Awkward! And Russian opponents of Putin's regime get to explain that they are true Russian patriots, not CIA stooges. Also awkward!
Well. The recent declaration that we considered Putin a war criminal created a certain tension - would we negotiate with him, or arrest him? Now that Biden has come out in favor of regime change, a negotiated settlement may be even more difficult.
SPINNERS GOTTA SPIN: The NY Times shows us highly trained clean-up artists at work:
Administration officials have been careful not to hint at Mr. Putin’s removal from office, knowing that it would be taken by the Kremlin as a dangerous escalation. Shortly after Mr. Biden’s speech concluded, the White House insisted that the president was not calling for regime change with his comment about Mr. Putin remaining in power, which appeared to be ad-libbed.
“The president’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region,” a White House official said in a statement to reporters. “He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change.”
Whatever, dude. Go with that.
But some experts said Mr. Biden may come to regret the comment.
“The White House walk back of @POTUS regime change call is unlikely to wash,” Richard Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said in a tweet. “Putin will see it as confirmation of what he’s believed all along. Bad lapse in discipline that runs risk of extending the scope and duration of the war.”
On the other hand...
Mr. Biden’s statement that Mr. Putin could not remain in power could be perceived “as a call for regime change,” said Michal Baranowski, a senior fellow and director of the Warsaw office of the German Marshall Fund, a nonpartisan policy organization. But he said the comment was unlikely, in itself, to lead to any escalation.
“Russia is responding to military logic much more than political logic,” Mr. Baranowski said, noting the powerful explosions near Lviv heard minutes before Mr. Biden began speaking.
I hope he's right, but Putin clearly misjudged the military logic of this invasion.
it does seem to be the contest of the greater fool,

lets put some cards on the table as bryan dean wright, pointed out last week, we are punishing the Russian people with brutal sanctions, we are providng weapons that kill Russian soldiers, and we are providing the intelligence that assures they are dead, in most cases this is a state of dejure war, sans a pesky declaration or even statement, we can look at that threadbare statement as pretext from about two weeks ago

And we ended up in direct combat with hundreds of thousands of screaming commie Chinese with the consideration of the use of nuclear weapons on the table.

France's Ministry of Defense provides a very clear map of the military situation today in Ukraine. Further territorial advances by Russia would exceed initial conflict objectives and would constitute an expansion of war aims.
The utterances of a befuddled buffoon whose incompetence is only exceeded by his incontinence should be measured against the map at the end of the conflict. Russia can be expected to withdraw from the area around Kiev but very little withdrawal is likely to occur elsewhere.
Ukraine would be better off receiving shipments of fertilizer rather than armaments or NATO toy soldiers.

Does anyone wonder why the Dutch are powerhouses in speed skating? Well, I happened to read an old children’s novel when I was a kid called “Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates”. The canals of Amsterdam used to freeze over every winter and they held skating races on them. This was during what is known as the Little Ice Age.
This was the same time period in which the Thames froze over (as seen in landscape paintings) and the Donner party died in very cold weather trying to cross a mountain pass into California.
My personal opinion is that the warmer weather we have seen since WWII is an aberration and in fact, world temperature averages are lower than they have been. Those of us who think we are moving back to an age of wooly mammoths are lumped in with the global warming crowd as believing in “climate change”. Fooey on that!

Good afternoon! I finally finished the book "Queen Victoria and the Romanovs." It has been on my Kindle, but I've been distracted. My impression is that especially in the later years of Victoria's reign, you can see WWI a mile away. She continued her beloved Albert's belief that intermarriage in the royal houses of Europe would strengthen bonds.
Victoria's beloved grandaughters Ella and Alix were killed by the Bolsheviks less than 20 years after her death. Victoria opposed both marriages and although she thought Nicky charming, she feared for them living in Russia. Ella led a spiritual life after her husband's (Grand Duke Sergei) death in 1905 and the Bolsheviks still threw her down a mine shaft.

This guy being interviewed spent time with the Azov Battalion and it's leaders and gives an honest evaluation of their history and goals. Near the end he's asked how they'll respond to an end of the war. He claims the Azov's will never stop fighting if territorial boundaries are redrawn or Crimea is given up. Very informative.

--The point is, Ig, that the Russians and Chicoms did intervene in Korea and Vietnam without a world war breaking out, much as the NATO countries have been supplying arms and intelligence to Ukraine.--
That's one point. Another might be that a world war could very easily have broken out during Korea. Another might be that we had a near nuclear monopoly during Korea. Another might consider that Korea and Vietnam bordered China but not the main antagonists of the cold war, the USSR and us.
Finally and perhaps most importantly, while Truman, Eisenhower, LBJ and Nixon all had their flaws and issues they were all light years beyond the POS, corrupt, imbecilic nutbar currently occupying the WH that the survival of the USA and a good portion of the world hinges on.
Counting on that complete and profound idiot to continue Ukraine's war-making ability without causing a radioactive conflagration seems to put Samuel Johnson's gag about a second marriage being the triumph of hope over experience to shame.

Jane, for starters, I don't believe a word the Mockingbird MSM reports about this conflict.
And I can't stomach the thought of siding with the likes of Soros, Hillary and the rest of those traitors.
I think Zelensky's a puppet and letting his Azov's kill innocent civilians to blame on the Russians. I've posted reports with proof that they're hiding in schools and shopping malls.
And George Eliason, an American journalist has been in the Donbass for years, reporting on these neo Nazi war crimes and has seen the mass graves.
And finally, Putin may be evil, but right now I believe he's the lesser of two evils ad the only one standing between us and a NWO.
And I imagine I'd be awfully upset if a foreign adversary armed Cuba or Venezuela with weapons of mass destruction.
I think Russia will liberate the Donbass but those Nazi's won't stop instigating until they're exterminated but I'm not sure that's possible.
These feel like end times to me Jane!

Funny the things you find reading a four year old comment thread:
“And now we have a brand-new shiny sanctions bill intended to keep any rapprochement between the U.S. and Russia from occurring.
Why is that? What’s got them so scared of relations with Russia improving?
Maybe, just maybe, because Putin has all of these people dead to rights and he’s informed Trump of what the real story behind all of this is.
That at its core is a group of very bad people who attempted to steal trillions but only got away with billions and still have their sights set on destroying Russia for their own needs.
And Lindsay Graham is their mouthpiece. (all puns intended)
That all of U.S. foreign policy is built on a lie.
That our relationship with Russia was purposefully trashed for the most venal of reasons, for people like Bill Browder to not only steal billions but then have the chutzpah to steal the $230 million he would have paid in taxes on those stolen billions.
And the only way to ensure none of those lies are exposed is for Trump to be unable to change any of it by forcing him to openly side with the Russian President over members of his own political party.”

Dwight Eisenhower served between 1943 & 1952 as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, Military Governor of Germany, and NATO Supreme Commander. Some may recall this as a time of significant foreign policy events in Europe.

bubarooni,
The French map updates daily and there's a more detailed map available immediately below it. Russia turned up the heat yesterday but has colled it down around Kiev today as Zelensky begins the process of complying with Russian demands (fig leaf sizing in process).

Rocco,
I tend to agree for the most part, but like with everything, the evidence is in short supply - or being squelched. As far as “the end of the world”… certainly as we know it.

"Tucker Carlson points out that Biden's frequent outbursts of uncontrolled anger -- his increasing inability to regulate his emotions -- are a telltale symptom of senility."
Remember when we were worried that the old senile Soviet leadership was going to start WWIII.

Davod,
The media / Dems were warning Reagan (Ray Gun) was going to start WWIII because of senility and Star Wars. Not the senile old Sovs that Ted Kennedy asked for campaign help from.
