OK, we are taking on the Tough Questions du Jour - why was Rod Stewart singing "Sweet Caroline" at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Concert? Isn't that a Red Sox Nation thing?
Well, yes-ish, per the Times - Sweet Caroline is a fan favorite around the world and in many sports, and has been a thing in Northern Ireland for years, but... per the Times, the song came to Wembley in 2019 for the Red Sox-Yankees two game set and then took off during the Euro 2020 soccer tournament in 2021. LOTS more here, but I know you want to see Rod take a whack at it. Come in at the 1:55 mark, as Rod explains that the BBC made him sing this. Might want to think about turning down the sound and closing your eyes, but here goes...
If it’s for the Queen, it’s okay in my book.

Clarice ended this week's fine Pieces thusly;
--It will be a lot longer and harder to turn the country around than you might otherwise imagine.--
Maybe. The progs are the Establishment at this point and as they muck things up more and more will become an increasingly unpopular one until they are anathema.
Events have a way of turning loutish, unpopular Establishments out much quicker than they might otherwise imagine too.
A depreferencing cascade is often quicker, more tumultuous and more complete than the preference variety.

Democrats Face Pressure on Crime From a New Front: Their Base
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/03/us/democrats-crime-gun-violence.html
Saturday’s article, written by Alexander Burns, focused on the reality that the progressive ideals of “police reform” have given way to the epidemic of violent crimes. The report notes that the most significant push for change comes “largely from people of color.”
Burns points out that nonwhite citizens have been “bearing the brunt of a national crime wave.” She also pointed out that most of the Democratic political candidates pushing for more policing are also nonwhite.

Dumb question: Durham wouldn't have let the Clinton donors slide on the jury because it increased the odds of tampering, would it? Her campaign would've definitely had all their personal contact information. Just seems like a nice big temptation.....
No idea, just wondering if that sort of thing's been done before with a jury pool, turning it into a honey trap. I know the Doj has done it with mob trials.

I agree with Iggy, and said so when I posted Carice's article. The article is, as usual, very good. The conclusion on how much time is debatable. Preference cascades (which in reality are almost always depreference cascades) sometimes happen very rapidly. This looks to be one of those times.

Clarice,
Good article. I spend a lot of time encouraging friends and sisters not to give up. We seem to be hanging on here - maybe because we are a large, close-knit family that are rooted in the Midwest.
A friend of mine has started speaking out at Kroger or when waiting in line at the drugstore, pointing out how prices are climbing and blaming Biden ( rightfully so). Not one person has contradicted her.
People who support the commie crooks aka the Democrat party should be shamed.

In a surprising development surrounding WikiLeaks and the fate of Julian Assange, who is still in London's Belmarsh prison awaiting awaiting a decision from UK Home Secretary Priti Patel on extradition to the US, a Spanish court has summoned former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to testify on whether the CIA planned to assassinate WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Melinda, litigants get to strike a small number of potential jurors from the pool(preemptory strikes), and I assume Durham used up his strikes. Then any remaining members of the panel may be struck only at the discretion of the judge, and Judge Cooper refused to strike the three most likely biased jurors who remained.

Hi, all--sorry to have been absent (have been at JOM2). But I had to say: what sillies to try to do natural history on Paddington Bear! One of the first things we learn is that his grandmother, who raised him, has had to go into a "home for retired bears," and so the various wild improbabilities which follow are all just fine for the child reader. Paddington comes to Peru fairly literate in English, and the Browns (his English adoptive family) and their speech patterns were sure to have rubbed off on him. Plus small brown bears are cute; we are reminded repeatedly that he's a "young" bear--who never grows up, thankfully (like the Brown children, Paddington gets an allowance, which he shepherds carefully). I thought the little video was completely charming.

So good to learn that, Clarice--that was Michael Bond, the author, who witnessed that and was inspired, then. Gosh, that's a sanitized narrative--Paddington was happy and comfortable in Peru, was sustained with plenty of marmalade on his long journey, and was (almost) immediately taken into the Brown family once he arrived, into the comforts of the English middle-class. The stories of the Jewish children--well.

Stopped today to fill up the vehicle I drive to get to work.
$5.25 a gallon.
If I pull that stunt this weekend, Acct'ing is gonna get me.
How fortunate am I?
Very.
How many others can't obfuscate their fuel purchases?
Not many.
The 'not many' is the vast majority of the electorate I'm thinking.
I don't know where it'll stop but I'd wager on The Red Wave in 2022 and the The Red Tsunami in 2024 is gonna bring this current maladministration to an end.

That video of Stabenow laughing and bragging about driving to DC in her electric car so she didn’t have to worry about gad prices should be played nationwide.

Target expects squeezed profits from aggressive plan to get rid of unwanted inventory
"Target warned investors Tuesday that its profits will take a short-term hit, as it marks down unwanted items, cancels orders and takes aggressive steps to get rid of extra inventory."
Other retailers have similar problems. I was food-shopping at Walmart last week and they had over a hundred bicycles on display outside the store. Overstock?
Makes me wonder if a lot of stuff waiting to be unloaded at our western ports is now considered to be overstock too.

Two assessments of the Ukraine war (I've reversed the order):
https://militaryland.net/ukraine/invasion-day-104-summary/
(better maps than ISW and less opinion)
https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-june-7
All the sources I look at seem to have had the situation in Sieverierodonetsk incorrect over the last few days. Ukrainian counter-attacks, if they occurred, were overstated, in some cases, into fantasies.
ISW seems to correctly state the current situation, but I'm tiring of their creeping opinion-ism. To wit: Fred Kagan, one of the ISW analysts, has a Time op-ed:
https://time.com/6184437/ukraine-russian-offensive/
The New Russian Offensive Is Intended to Project Power It Cannot Sustain
https://time.com/6184437/ukraine-russian-offensive/
I'm not saying he's entirely wrong. I think the Russians are running out of steam myself, but when he starts advocating, instead of just reporting, with some insight, I think ISW becomes less useful for its predictions of what's next.
